Firmware Update ATTBI

****For those who have issues with configedit. Check out the posts towards the bottom HERE on how to fix the issue with COMDLG32.OCX.****

There are a few things you need to know before you upgrade your firmware. This is required.

You need to know your tftp server.

The tftp server is the server that sends the config files to your modem.

It's really important. For the Chicago suburbs, it's usually 12.242.20.9 (usually ends in 9, and seems to be one of the sas servers. try the sas servers ip for your area if you don't know. )

Check out this list of sas servers. Use this list to find your tftp server ip.

Once you know your tftp server, we can move on.

Download the following files.

Surfboard 4200 Firmware 4.4.2

Tftp server software

At&T Broadband Config File. (included with the firmware download)

Config Edit

Ok, this method is known to work for version 4.3.3. some versions of 4.4.0 won't update the firmware. If you have 4.4.0, it may or may not work. some modems will report that the current version is current and not update to 4.4.2. Sorry.

Step one. Change your ip address of your computer to the following.

ip address: the tftp server ip address.

subnet: 255.255.255.0

gateway: 192.168.100.1

Reboot. (not needed for xp) When you come back, internet will be down. The only page you can get to is the http://192.168.100.1 page.

unzip the config file and the firmware to a folder. Use the config Edit file to open up the config file. Inside the config file you will see the update software line. You need to take out the ip address (the 12.242.20.9 address, unless it is your tftp server ip) and replace it with your tftp server ip address. Don't Change anything else! Very important!!! I'm not responsible if you do change anything else! Changing of the max up and down will result in being banned off the attbi network. Don't chance it.

Once you changed the ip address. Save the file. (if for some reason you have ultralink, rename it to the correct file. usually hsd3.0M.cfg. Check in your logs to make sure).

unzip the tftp server software. Run the program and click on settings. Make sure the base directory is the same directory that your config file and firmware are in. change the directory on the program if it's not. Security should be none. Press ok when finished. It should say on the top of the program "Server Interfaces: then your tftp server ip address." If it does. great. things are going well.

Now, people have reported issues with routers. I do recommend that you hook up your computer directly to the modem via Ethernet. (not USB). you should have the tftp software open right now. place that in the corner. Open up an internet explorer/mozilla window and go to http://192.168.100.1/logs.html You want to be able to see both the internet window and also the tftp server software window.

Here is the important step. unplug the modem. plug the modem back in and keep refreshing the log page. It won't come up right away. you will have to wait a few seconds for the modem to start. Watch the logs to see the progress. It should get the config file and register it ok. in a few seconds later, if the config file worked you will see the tftp server software sending the firmware file. it will send the file and then reboot the modem. it may take upto 20-30 seconds for the modem to reboot.

Surfboard 4200 with the firmware 4.4.0, look at the logs. If it doesn't update the firmware you NEED to go to the bottom of the page. Keep everything running. Skip the next step.....

when you see the modem rebooting, unplug the Ethernet wire from the modem. (so it doesn't try to get the config file from you again. It wont but it will confuse the modem). once the modem is ok, plug the Ethernet back into the modem and go to the help page of 192.168.100.1 and check the firmware version. If everything worked ok, it should be 4.4.2.

If you have any questions. I am djdanska on dslreports.com or you can email me at djdanska@danboy.net

There is a piece of software that they used to have at iuncap.com that let users force a firmware update. They took it down and when I find it I will post in here with instructions. It's really easy but you need the software for 4.4.0 users. If you have it, please message me too.

Update: Surfboard 4200 4.4.0 users.

If you wish to upgrade to the 4.4.2 firmware, follow all the instructions above. When you look at your logs, if it says image current follow the next step.

Download cmfirm (its a winrar file)

Run the progam.

Enter 192.168.100.1 for the cable modem ip address (i believe it is 192.168.100.1.)

Public for community

Firmware server is the tftp server ip address (same one as the tftp program says)

firmware on the next line (SB4200-0.4.4.2-SCM01-NOSH.hex.bin) .

Make sure the tftp software is still running. Click update firmware. In a few seconds you will see the tftp software sending the file. Then the modem will reboot. Now unplug the ethernet wire while it's rebooting. When the modem is online, plug the ethernet back in and check the help page and look for the firmware version. it should be 4.4.2. Now just change your ip address back to dhcp and you are all set..
